We provide empirical support for our arguments by developing a method for estimating firms’ project CAPM betas and project returns. The formula for CAPM: Ei = Rf + Bi (Em - Rf) Where Ei = expected return on an investment, Rf = the return on a risk-free asset such as US Treasury bills, Bi = beta of an investment, or the volatility of an investment relative to the overall market, and Em = the expected market return. The portfolio beta is denoted by β. Calculating the RRR involves discounting cash flows to arrive at the net present value (NPV) of an investment.
